What do Monty Python, Hamlet and the group Oasis have in common? To many they are universally incomprehensible but they do in fact PROVIDE good starting points when working on intonation and sentences stress, and for comprehending rapid speech.
Participants at this presentation will need to bring fully functioning vocal tracts with them!

HUMOUR ME
By Paul Phillips

Jokes are a great way of learning vocabulary as they often use plays on words that reveal the meaning of idiomatic expressions. In addition they are usually full of slang and informal expressions as they are a spoken art form. In this seminar, we will become laughter detectives trying to identify why jokes are funny, how we can learn from them and how different techniques can be applied to improve our own comic delivery.
Paul is currently ADOS at IH Belgrano. He has taught in England, Greece, Italy and Spain, the latter two with IH. In 2007 he completed the DELTA and the IHYLC (International House younger learners course). He recently completed IH Colt (certificate in online tutoring) and is coordinator for IH Belgrano’s online services. He is also currently developing resources for the IH World Organisation.

PUT YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD. IDIOMS FUN CLUB
By Marta García Lorea

  He who learns, teaches.
We will work on activities to provide you with myriads of opportunities for actually proving that a man's conversation is the mirror of his thoughts. When there is a will there is a way of instilling our classes and lives with colorful idioms and sayings, some of which, as we will see can be found in many cultures. We will be in stitches while getting familiar with popular idioms, their origin and similar ones in other languages. Remember those who don't get their feet wet don't catch fish.
Marta García Lorea had the honor to be in the first primary forms ever created at the Lengüitas and to be among the last group of primary school teachers who graduated from this prestigious school. Proud student of "Mamá Sofía" who was our English and Civics Rights teacher. Graduate cum laude from INSP Joaquín V. González, CAECE University and UNED ( Spain).

NEW ENGLISH GRAMMAR PERSPECTIVES – DOES IT ALL DEPEND?
By Leandro Paladino

Age, place of origin, dialect, (desired) status, level of education… all these (and more) are factors that inevitably affect any speaker’s perception of what is right or wrong in language. The notion of a single Standard English has long since been defied, though language-teaching materials may still have to (choose to?) present rules as if they were carved in stone, not to be touched, gospel truth. But as language learners and teachers, we should know better! Cartoons, film and music will help us (to?) explore this fuzzy area where it would seem that, in language and grammar, it may all depend!.   Leandro Paladino is a graduate English teacher from Universidad Nacional de La Plata, and is currently completing a Master’s in English with Universidad de Belgrano, Argentina. He is the General Director of NEL Inglés, in La Plata. Leandro has taught Language, Writing and Phonetics for over ten years, both in teacher-training college and on private courses. He currently teaches English Grammar II and English Language IV at I.S.P. Terrero, in La Plata. He has delivered numerous courses, workshops and seminars for teachers and translators around Argentina, on areas such as Spoken English, Language Awareness, Testing and ELT Management.
