She holds a TESOL and ESOL certificates from Trinity College, London. She was awarded the FCTBE from the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry and she's also a Practitioner in NLP. She has a postgraduate in Methodology from Oxford House. She became a Teacher Educator in 2005. She was also published by TESOL IS in 2008. She's been a teacher for 30 years and her experience derives from very different contexts. This year she was selected to join the Teacher in Residence Program from Partners of America in Minnesota. This presentation discusses the recent developments of this dynamic field and provides practical and innovative ideas on the use of technology resources in the language class and beyond.   Alejandra Parra is Associate Dean of International Affairs at the Fischler School of Education of Nova Southeastern University. She holds an M.A. in TESOL from the Monterey Institute of International Studies and is a candidate for the Ed.D. in Instructional Technology and Distance Education (NSU). She has presented widely at international conferences in Mexico, Korea, United States, Ecuador, and Argentina. Her research interests include the internationalization of higher teacher education and how second language acquisition interacts with the use and implementation of technology applications.

   

Taboo Issues in the EFL Class: Where to Draw the Line

  Should we celebrate Halloween with our students? Are detractors right to say that the Potter saga is inappropriate literature for children? How can mythology foster religious tolerance in the classroom? Do you dare to teach how to swear words when teenagers ask you about them? What does diversity imply? In this workshop, I will address these questions and show examples of how to approach them. I will also provide participants with tips on how to deal with concerned parents and school authorities.   Alejandro De Angelis began teaching English in 1992, when he was just a student at IPPI (Instituto Patagónico del Profesorado de Inglés) in Trelew, Chubut. He started to show a special interest in literature for children and adolescents at an early age and became involved in literary research after meeting his teacher and mentor, writer Nelby Bustamante, in 1994 at Universidad Nacional de la Patagonia San Juan Bosco. He has worked at IPPI since 1996, when he got his degree as a teacher, teaching Literature for Children and Adolescents, Language, Diction and Cultural Studies, and delivering development courses on a variety of themes which include literature, language and methodology. He has been a speaker at international congresses like FAAPI and ABS International on several occasions, presenting his research on the fields of literature for children and adolescents, language awareness, and methodoloy. At the moment he is the headmaster of his own private institute, Manhattan English Institute, as well as a teacher trainer and coordinator at IPPI.

  As Educational Coordinators one of our most important roles is 'observer'. However, very few of us ever receive any training on how to carry out this delicate and, at times, stressful aspect of our job.

  Kate (RSA DTEFLA) has worked for International House in Europe and Buenos Aires since 1992. She has been ADos, DoS and is now a teacher trainer. He who laughs last... processes info more slowly.' Ha, ha! C U!   Rosana M. Fernández Coto de Savini has been an EFL teacher and teacher trainer for more than twenty five years. She completed a post graduate course in ´English History’ and has been an ESOL examiner since 1999. She has been the Head of several prestigious bilingual and semi-bilingual schools. She is currently the Head and owner of William Shakespeare, School of English and the English Headmistress at Instituto Cervantes. She holds a Master certificate in NLP and is a Neuropsychoeducator. She is also the Head of the Neurolearning Department of Asociación Educar.

   

What to observe when you are observing!

  Where does the action take place in a school? In the classroom! So, visiting classrooms is a must for every coordinator! But generally speaking, teachers are not open to it, mainly because they see observation of classes as a threatening situation. Carried out in the right way, classroom observation is a blessing to professional development. So, how can we make our teachers more aware of its importance? The purpose of this session is to help teachers see class observations as a powerful tool that can help them become even better teachers by reflecting on their own teaching.
Observation forms will be shared and discussed as well as information on how to hold post observation conferences.
  Laura Lewin heads ABS International. President of the Organizing Committee of the International Congress for ELT Managers, and President of the Organizing Committee of the International Congress of Professional Development for Teachers of English, Laura is also the editor of EMO (Educational Management Online), an e-zine that reaches over 98,000 ELT professionals on a monthly basis.
Ms Lewin pursued studies in translation in Argentina (UADE) and in management in the USA (University of California). Flow, Literature and the Arts

  How can we create environments where learners flow? How can we build scenarios that activate our students creative energy? Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi - the architect of the notion of flow says that the creative act never comes alone. This presentation will invite participants to explore possible connections between the Arts and Literature by visiting children´s authors and illustrators.   María Teresa Manteo holds a degree as an English Teacher for Primary and Secondary School from Lenguas Vivas Teachers' Training College, where she also completed a post-graduate course in English Literature. She has obtained a Further Professional Studies Certificate in Education Management from the University of Bristol UK as well as a Practitioner's Certificate in Neurolinguistic Programming Applied to Education. She has taught Literature at IGCSE and International Baccalaureate levels and lectured for various publishers of English reading materials. As Support Learning Educational Consultancy Director, she trains teachers in affective methods in the teaching of reading and writing. She also runs SL educational programme Touch the Author Workshops for Children as well as the new reading project in Spanish Arte y Lectura.

   

Exchange Programs in High Schools

  The presenter will show how she managed to create a student exchange program between a secondary school in Mn, the USA, in which Spanish is taught as a second language, and a secondary school in B.A., Argentina in which English is taught as a second language. The success of this programme does not only lie in the ideal context provided for second language learning but also in the methodology underpinned, which highly motivate students to acquire the necessary language skills to understand and communicate to their English/Spanish speaking counterparts about each others culture and customs through real communicative tasks.   Lic. Stella Palavecino has taught English at various levels in Argentina and Spanish as a second language in the USA. She has specialized in `Didáctica y Trabajo de Campo 2´ at Instituto Superior de Profesorado `Dr. Joaquín V. Gonzalez´. At the moment, she is a Professor and Overseas Coordinator and at `Universidad Nacional de San Martín´, where she has designed and implemented an exchange program with Nottingham University. She is also the head of the English department at `Buenos Aires English House´, where she has been directing and coordinating exchange programs for secondary level.

  It is becoming harder and harder to be able to ‘capture’ students’ attention. This new generation of digital natives seems to have a shorter attention span than former young generations. How can teachers cope with this issue? One of the ways is by introducing an interactive whiteboard into the classroom. The presenter will briefly analyse the tools the I W offers. Stress: the silent tsunami

  Why do we feel stressed? Can we get used to it? Was stress less frequent 50 years ago? Is it natural to feel stress? A hundred and one questions to be answered on stress and how it affects our everyday lives.   Teacher of English since 1975, head of Practical English Teaching - Cultural Inglesa in Quilmes since 1980, inquisitive and knowledge addict since I was born in 1953. She became a Neuposychoeducator and trainer in 2008 and since then she has been working in the field of Neurosciences and Education. She is the Director of the Formation in Neuropsychoeducation in Asociación Educar and has been lecturing for a couple of years now. It is her aim in every presentation she makes to join all the experience gathered in the classroom for decades with the new scientific research to help young teachers improve their work at the pace the new century demands, making less effort and getting better results.
